How come when white people get perm their hair gets curly and when black people get a perm their hai

Perm used to be called permanent, and it is just that. It permanently changes your hair. It is not just a black/white thing. Anyone with curly hair can get theirs perm straitened. The curly perms and the straighteners used to use the same chemical. you either rolled it on rods and applied the solution, or applied the solution and combed the hair straight.

Most people of African descent have a curly pattern to their hair. Each strand is a spiral, rather than a straight line. People of European descent have a straight pattern in their hair strand. Permanents, or 'perms', chemically break and alter the curl pattern of the hair strand. In people of African descent, their hair straightens, and in people of European descent, their hair curls. The altered version is hard to reverse, and generally stays that way until the hair grows out, thus the name, 'permanent'.

The difference is a perm versus a relaxer. When a white person perms their hair it is to make it curly. A black person relaxes their hair to straighten it.

Hope this helps.

My hair isn't naturally straight - it's curly, all over my head. I had a friend tell me she gets her perms so she'd have what she called "good hair" %26amp; it wouldn't be nappy. (her words) White people get perms to straighten their hair too; when you get a perm %26amp; you want it straight, it just doesn't get rolled on the rods. My daughter has curly hair also; it is in ringlets from the crown of her head to the bottom of her hair. So we don't have to get perms for curls.

It's the chemicals that are similar and the method that is total different. For example, if you're black, and you ask for a perm, they assume you want your hair chemically straightened for better manageability. But what would happen if you asked for a wave, or some other kind of permanent curly treatment? They would do the same thing but use rollers to create the curl or wave. When white people ask for a perm, it is assumed they want curly or wavy hair for texture and/or volume. But they certainly can get a "perm" that would straighten curly, wavy, or kinky hair. It's just similar chemicals but different methods. Make sense? Good Luck!
