Perm used to be called permanent, and it is just that. It permanently changes your hair. It is not just a black/white thing. Anyone with curly hair can get theirs perm straitened. The curly perms and the straighteners used to use the same chemical. you either rolled it on rods and applied the solution, or applied the solution and combed the hair straight.

My hair isn't naturally straight - it's curly, all over my head. I had a friend tell me she gets her perms so she'd have what she called "good hair" %26amp; it wouldn't be nappy. (her words) White people get perms to straighten their hair too; when you get a perm %26amp; you want it straight, it just doesn't get rolled on the rods. My daughter has curly hair also; it is in ringlets from the crown of her head to the bottom of her hair. So we don't have to get perms for curls.

It's the chemicals that are similar and the method that is total different. For example, if you're black, and you ask for a perm, they assume you want your hair chemically straightened for better manageability. But what would happen if you asked for a wave, or some other kind of permanent curly treatment? They would do the same thing but use rollers to create the curl or wave. When white people ask for a perm, it is assumed they want curly or wavy hair for texture and/or volume. But they certainly can get a "perm" that would straighten curly, wavy, or kinky hair.
