If your braids or locs are too heavy or tight they may pull the hair out at the root. The white you are seeing could be the folicle of the hair. Be very careful because you can lose your hair by damaging the folicle. (It has happened to me) Sometimes it will grow back sometimes not.

Or

It could be lint or dust build up. because of the "tangle" (can't think of a better word) in a braid or loc it is easier for the natural oils that come from your scalp to collect at the bottom. Once that is there it is easier for lint etc to collect as they stick to it. That oil build up is also part of the reason your hair locs if you keep your braids in too long.

If you hair comes out and has a white bulb at the end that means you're shedding. The white bulb is the root.

All hair has white bulbs at the end, not just "afro" hair. You can just see it better because the hair and scalp is usually dark. As far as locks go, unlike loose hair the hair is not shed.
